Here's something that trips people up: the town of Deer Lodge is in Powell County, not Deer Lodge County. It's a common mix-up, but we've been working in both places long enough that we stopped noticing the confusion a while ago. Deer Lodge — the town — is the Powell County seat, sitting about 40 miles northwest of our Butte showroom on I-90. It's a small, historic community of around 3,000 people, known for the old Montana State Prison complex and the Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site just north of town.

The Clark Fork River runs through Deer Lodge, and the valley floor sits at roughly 4,500 feet. Winters are cold and persistent — you'll see stretches of below-zero nights from late November well into February. Many of the homes in the older neighborhoods along Milwaukee Avenue and Missouri Avenue were built during Deer Lodge's railroad and ranching heyday, and quite a few still have original masonry fireplaces with crumbling mortar and unlined chimneys. We do a lot of chimney reline and insert work in Deer Lodge — it's one of the most practical upgrades a homeowner here can make for both safety and efficiency.

Powell County also includes the communities of Gold Creek, Garrison, and Helmville. Gold Creek sits right off I-90 and was the site where the Northern Pacific Railway drove its golden spike in 1883 — today it's a quiet handful of houses and ranches. Garrison is the junction where I-90 meets MT-12, and from there the Flint Creek valley opens up to the west. Helmville lies further north in the Nevada Creek drainage, accessible via MT-271 — a genuinely remote community where propane and wood are the main fuel options and a solid stove is the backbone of any home's heating system.
