Front Facing FR 31 Gas Fireplace
The Frameless Statement Piece A fire that’s part of the wall, with room for the TV right above it. Who it’s for Most built-in gas fireplaces put a metal frame between the fire and the wall, and the wall above them runs too hot for anything to hang there—so the fireplace sits in the room instead of belonging to it. You need a fire that disappears into the wall and lets the design happen around it. If you’re building or remodeling and you want the fire to read as architecture—tile, stone, or plaster running straight to the flame, the television centered above it—the Ortal Front Facing FR 31 is that fireplace. Choose a standard framed unit instead and you’ll live with a metal border around the fire and a blank buffer zone above it . Quick facts Fuel: natural gas; a propane conversion kit is available Controls: remote with thermostat, timer, program, and eco modes; wall switch and smartphone app optional Safety barrier: protective screen or double-glass front—one is required, your choice Media: five included log-set styles, with upgrade sets and branch accents available What makes it special The FR 31 is built to share the wall. Ortal’s passive cool-wall construction keeps the surface above the fire cool enough that a TV or artwork can hang right above the flame —no mantel, no buffer zone, no rearranging the room around the fireplace. There’s no frame and no grille work. Your finish material runs right to the edge of the glass , so the fire reads as part of the wall the way a window does , not as an appliance set into it. The remote does the tending for you. Set 70 and the fireplace holds the room there on its own , schedule it to come on before you’re downstairs in the morning, or run it from your phone. There’s a child lock, a countdown timer, and an eco mode that lets the flame rise and fall on its own. Possible downsides The double-glass version requires household power and won’t run during an outage; the protective-screen version doesn’t carry this limit. The first 12 hours of burning cure the paint —expect an odor, some white haze on the glass, and a dealer visit afterward to clean it. You never open the glass yourself —cleaning and service behind it are handled by your Ortal dealer. If you want the fire to be part of the wall instead of an appliance set into it, the FR 31 is the right decision. The room it’s in becomes the room the house lives in. The FR 31 comes with your choice of five included log sets—standard, weathered driftwood, refractory clay, and English short or long—plus optional bonfire, campfire, aspen, and branch media, a black reflective interior that mirrors the flame, and your pick of a protective screen or double-glass front.
