Front Facing 68H Gas Fireplace

Available at both showrooms

The Wall-Wide Statement Fire Nearly six feet of fire, built into the wall like it was always part of the plan. Who it’s for Most gas fireplaces are a window of flame framed in metal, and the room ends up designed around an appliance instead of a fire. You need a fire that reads as architecture, not equipment. If you’re building or remodeling and want the fireplace to be the wall—finish materials running right to the glass, a TV hanging above it—the Ortal Front Facing 68H is the one. It’s a built-in unit that installs into framed construction, so plan on finish work as part of the job; choose a standard framed fireplace instead and you’ll have a fine fire with a border around it. Quick facts Viewing area: 68″ wide × 21 5/8″ tall Fuel: natural gas; propane conversion available Controls: handheld remote with thermostat; wall switch and smartphone app options Lighting: internal lighting included, dimmable from the remote Safety barrier: protective screen or double glass—your choice What makes it special The 68H is the tall-glass version of Ortal’s front facing line: a fire 68 inches wide and nearly 22 inches tall with no louvers and no metal frame. Tile, stone, or plaster runs right to the edge of the glass, so the fire looks designed into the wall rather than installed in it. Above the fire, the wall stays cool. Ortal’s passive cool wall design means a TV or artwork can hang directly above the fireplace —the layout most rooms want and most fireplaces don’t allow. The remote works like a thermostat: set 70 and the flame adjusts on its own to hold the room there. And because the firebox is lit, you can run the lights with no flame at all —a warm glow on an evening that doesn’t need the heat. Possible downsides It will not run during a power outage. The internal lighting—and the double-glass version—operate on an AC adapter, so household power is required. The black reflective interior is an option, not standard. If you want the fire to be the first thing people notice when they walk in, the Front Facing 68H is the right decision. The wall it lives in becomes the room everyone ends up in. Choose a protective screen or double-glass front, natural gas or a propane conversion, and an optional black reflective interior; five log sets are included—standard, weathered driftwood, refractory clay, and short or long English logs—with bonfire, campfire, aspen, charred branch, and single-branch options in black, grey, or white available as upgrades.
